We have two exciting competitions for students to enter in January 2017 - perfect for your budding writer or chef.

2017 Citizenship Essay Contest

Theme: "We the People...why vote?"

You could win:

  • 1st place — $250
  • 2nd place — $125
  • 3rd place — $50

Entries Due January 6, 2017

How to enter….

  • Students in grades 6 must write a minimum of 500 words, typed and double-spaced with Times New Roman 12 Font and 1” margins.
  • Students in grades 3-5 may submit a maximum of 250 words, typed or handwritten;
  • Students in grades K-2 may submit a maximum of 100 words, typed or handwritten.
  • Special Writers may submit entries typed or handwritten.
  • In all categories, adherence to the theme, originality, clarity, thought, and skill in standard written English will be judged.
  • The theme must be used as the essay title and cannot be changed or altered in any way.

VA PTA Power Plates Competition

Like to cook? Have a good recipe to share?

How to enter…

  • There are five recipe categories – breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner entree or side dish, and dessert.
  • Entrants must submit their recipe, photo and entry form to Virginia PTA by email. Each entry should be emailed with the Students Name, Food Category in the subject line of the e-mail. Entries should be e-mailed to 1stvp@londontownepta.com by 11:59 p.m. on January 27th. Stu-dent finalists will be recognized at the Student Awards Ceremony on April 30, 2017.
  • Entry requirements. Each entry must be the original work of one student only. An adult may not alter the creative integrity of a student’s recipe. Only one student may be recognized as the award recipient for each entry. Each entry must contain the following three items:
    1. A Virginia PTA Power Plates Program Student entry form with
      • A title for the original recipe.
      • A statement on what inspired the healthy recipe. Is it gluten-free, nut-free or lactose-free? What other healthy foods might be served with this recipe? It should be between one sentence and 100 words.
      • Download form here
    2. A recipe typed on the provided entry form that is healthy according to the USDA nutrition guidance MyPlate at www.ChooseMyPlate.gov and contains
      • An ingredient list. This should be in standard U. S. measurement volume and weight. Ingredients should be commonly available at retail stores. Use generic names, not brand names.
      • Step-by-step preparation instructions, with cooking times, pan sizes, temperatures, and number of servings.
    3. A photograph under 2MB formatted as .jpg, .png or non-animated .gif. It should be a photograph of the food only. No person should appear in the photograph.

Judges will rate by the following:

  • 50% healthy nutritional value
  • 25% perceived taste
  • 15% creativity and originality
  • 10% student statement
